Since this has shown up now on Facebook in the Deathlands group, and on MackBolan.com as well, I guess this has become public knowledge. I can confirm that, in the wake of the HarperCollins purchase of Harlequin last August, the decision has been made to shut down the Gold Eagle imprint. This includes the termination of all titles currently published by Gold Eagle - Deathlands, Outlanders, Rogue Angel, Mack Bolan, Executioner, and Stony Man. There are still several more books in the pipeline for each of these series, but 2015 will be the end of the line.

I don't know when exactly the decision was made, but editors and authors began to be notified early yesterday. I learned about this yesterday morning, but was asked not to speak about it publicly out of deference to the employees/contractors/editors/authors who had not yet been notified. Given that I have seen the news in several places online now, I believe I am free to discuss it.

At the moment I have very few answers for you. There are a lot of very sad and recently unemployed people, several of whom I consider to be friends. I am reaching out to all of my contacts, and will provide you whatever information I can.

Regarding the various properties, that is all in flux at the moment and I don't believe anybody really knows for sure what will happen. There is some hope I have heard expressed by multiple insiders that another publisher might be interested in picking up the Axler property. I assume that the same is true of the Pendleton/Bolan property, although I really don't have many connections there. Glenn Williams over at MackBolan.com would be a better resource for that side of things.

All upcoming books currently listed on this site will still be published. There are a couple more in the pipeline beyond those that will also be published. There is enough advance notice that the current Outlanders series will be able to wrap up some dangling plot threads and not end on a cliffhanger. Given the more episodic nature of Deathlands, I don't believe the last book will end with any real finality.

So that's all I have for you at the moment. Obviously I am disappointed. Over the years I have become friends with several GE authors and editors, and I am very sad for them as well.

I will post more here when I am able.

    Updated info:

Gold Eagle will continue publication through December of 2015. Given that I usually have info about upcoming books about six to eight months out, it will probably be spring before I will know what the final titles are or who the authors are. I am certain that the last Outlanders published by Gold Eagle will be written by Rik Hoskin. I am virtually certain that I know who will write the final Deathlands book, but I am not ready to post that yet.

All of the remaining books to be published are either completed, or have approved synopsis.

To clarify regarding any other publisher continuing the series: it is a very slim chance, and I am not aware of any specific publisher that is interested. It would be more accurate to describe it as a "hope" than a "chance".

I'm in two minds about this whole thing, one side is for the closure the other against.

    For
All of the GE series are getting old and tired, there are finite variations on a theme governed by a formulaic system that you can write before you begin to rehash the same old thing again and again.
How many books can you continue to produce where the main characters never age, almost never change their clothes and recover from almost fatal trauma in the blink of an eye.
With numerous writers on board that appear to have read a handful of previous books (and prove it by throwing in odd bits of canon to prove they have read books 1, 6 or whatever) we end up with stories set in redoubts a few miles up the road from already established ones that the group just dont recall or settings so fantastic that they leave you wondering just how they got built in just 100 years after the total destruction of the world as we know it?
Finally, and this is only to do with the OL books, Mark may well get his hands back on Kane & Co.and we will once again get some REAL OL action back in print, all be it in a new guise I'm guessing?

    Against
I will miss my regular trips back to the 80's when I used to read a hell of a lot of post holocaust fiction. DL kept this dream alive. I have grown up with Ryan and co. I used to wonder at what I would be like when I was in my late 30's like Ryan and now Ryan is still in his late 30's -maybe pushing 42, and I'm now OLDER than him!!
DL and OL fill a niche in the market that will be left empty with their passing, what is out there to replace them?

Will they be picked up by another publisher, I doubt it? If they are it will most likely be with new authors with new ideas, Ryan and co. will be changed and become alien to us long time readers. No, I think it is time that we let them go, we have had our fun and they have had there's. I only hope that the last book finishes either with:

    "Ryan closed his eye..."

    or

some link into the start of the rise of the Barronies a la OL.

I would like to have seen more of the world outside the US. What's going on in India, Africa, Eastern Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia etc? South America kind of got a toe tip into it.... There is a whole planet of interesting cultures, and their view of the apocalyptic world so underserved... Oh, I know some might say "The book is for a narrow segment of the 'Merican market, and 'Mericans are not interested in stuff outside of 'Merica." and all that, but I think that the media in general underestimates Americans too often. There was a lot of cool potential untapped. The setting is still cool, themes of adventure, survival and standing up against tyranny have appeal to each generation of readers.
If DL gets to have a true ending, I'd like to see one where Ryan decides to grow enough to realize that he has run from responsibility for too long and picks a place to start making into a place he will stand, fight and defend/protect aggressively. It would be interesting to see what kind of people the companions' children would turn out to be, a generation later, what ideals would they fight for. It's easy to destroy, to tear down and run; building takes courage, personal investment and risk. That was always my one problem with the series: as brave as Ryan Candor is in a fight, he was a coward when it came to that.

Now that some of the dust and other debris has settled from the shocking announcement--shocking to some, not to me--of the Gold Eagle imprint's demise, here are my final thoughts on it...at least for a bit.

When the sale of Harlequin to News Corp was announced back in May, I suggested that the cancellation of GE was a real possibility. I took a rasher of snark for it from some quarters....significantly, those quarters have been strangely quiet over the last few days.

And despite an accusation from one GE scribe, I did not "revel" over writers being thrown out of work or anything of the sort. I won't say I was unhappy when my suspicions about the cancellation of GE series were confirmed, but I wasn't overjoyed either.

My strongest reaction was a profound sense of closure...and relief that an open wound can now begin to heal and the fate of the characters and concepts of my creation will no longer be left up to others...or consigned to limbo.

I'm not going to engage in Monday morning quarter-backing about things GE could've done/changed in order to have kept this from happening...I don't think it would have made any difference. The hand-writing was on the wall as far back as early 2009.

Action-adventure is a niche market and the big publishers are all about global positioning. The Mack Bolan books wouldn't be very popular in countries with large Muslim populations, nor would Deathlands which was very regional-centric.

If action-adventure has a future as a genre, it will be with smaller, independent publishers. But that will require a degree of entrepreneurial spirit and just plain old guts on the part of writers. So far, I haven't seen either. But maybe after a few months of no contracts and no advance checks, they'll break their conditioning.

Sad thing is, they'll have no choice...Gold Eagle was the last game in town...even the long-running "adult" western series like SLOCUM and LONGARM are no more...apparently all of them will be gone in a few months as part of a industry-wide slash n' burn.

    Anyway...thus endeth the sermon.

May I dare suggest, folks, that crowd source funding sites, like Kickstarter for just one example, of a way to put the funding together? A small press cooperative made up of writers, with the help of a couple of people to give administrative assistance, could make for a new venue. Print is great, but digital format is pretty much how I and most of my friends and the younger people that I work with read everything these days anyway -mobile libraries for mobile lives.
Audiobooks are also a medium good for the genre, I've read in a few places that the Deathlands series was popular with a lot of long haul drivers who enjoy a good action yarn.
So, if those partnered writers had the freedom to write, the rights to their titles and the fans behind them -count me as one - they would own the market and their futures. Instead of the profits going to making fat lumps of festering puss like Rupert Murdoch even fatter, they would go to making the actual content creators lives more comfortable.
    Just spitballing.

Good ideas...similar to ones I've proposed.

However, with the exception of myself and OL, none of the last 15 years worth of GE series were created by any of the writers. I would imagine the rights to the Bolan series will go back to the Pendleton family.

The former GE scribes would have to come up with new series...which wouldn't be hard for most of them.

What's hard is breaking through the mindset that the writers need the old system of publisher/editor/advance check.

I don't blame them for that mindset...I had it myself...it took the 2008-9 implosion of the publishing industry to get me to seriously consider self-publishing...starting with CRYPTOZOICA.

The sorry fact is--there is no imprint by a major publisher anything remotely like Gold Eagle...there hasn't been in years and most likely there never will be again.

So if action-adventure creators want to take control of their careers instead of leaving it up to a mainstream publishing industry that has no place for them any longer, they're going to have examine all options.

So what niche market the big publishers ignore other than missiles&muties are underserved but still profitable for a small, more agile, group to cater to?
You mentioned the pulp westerns, my grandad gave me a healthy appreciation for spurs&sixshooter tales. They are a great American genre appreciated world over. Good thinking, sir!

The Spy&SpecOps fans just got Glock blocked.
    Um... Shotgun&Sorcery? That's a thing, probably, right?
I am sure there are mini series that all of the writers have wanted to do but were told "Pass, but we all really liked it." or something about quarter percentages of market shares, blah blah, paradigm shift....

Well said Mr Ellis. From what you have hinted at please let there be a new series in the pipeline.
I think the most ironic thing about this is that the Deathlands series(can't say for Ol) was in the best place it has been in years, with the return of Alan Philipson( Penguin killer extraordinaire) , the amazing but oh so infuriatingly irregular novels from Mr Chuck Rogers and Victor Milan's novels.
It is horrible for the people that work for GE to be made redundant with apparently not very much notice but in the end will always come down to the lowest common denominator= in this case MONEY.
Let me end with a thank you to all the staff and writers who have kept me entertained and waiting for the next Dl novel these last three years.
    So long and farewell.

Also, another moronic decision on the part of GE: Vic Milan penning the final DL tome. Milan is adept at scribbling serviceable fare, but I really think he lacks the dramatic heft that the final book will need. I really think the job should have gone to either Alan Philipson or Chuck Rogers, both of whom would be almost guaranteed to write a brilliant final novel for the series.

It just so happened that HarperCollins chose December 2015 as the end month for Gold Eagle's publishing schedule. Contracts had already been signed and books scheduled. It wasn't a "moronic decision." Delivery dates had already been set.

I'm curious as to how this will effect the existence of JamesAxler.com. I'm hoping that this site will continue to operate after the closing of Gold Eagle's doors.

    Short version: I'm not sure.

Medium version: I have every intention for JamesAxler.com to remain for many years to come. Whatever the site does or does not mean to anyone else, it has been my primary online identity for over seventeen years now and I have no intention of letting it go.

Long version: Honestly, I am a little bit worried. When I first launched the site I fully expected to get a Cease and Desist letter from the lawyers at Harlequin. And if that had happened early on I would have shrugged and handed over the domain name. After a few years, though, my position changed. I knew that the senior editors at Gold Eagle were aware of the site's existence, and for whatever reason (probably indifference) they chose not to try to shut me down.

I have always done my very best to ensure that the content on this website remains well within my understanding of Fair Use laws. Of course, I'm in the United States and Gold Eagle / Harlequin is based in Canada, so even if I am correct in how I read the Fair Use statues in the U.S. that does not necessarily apply internationally.  Still, I have done my best to be honest in my dealings with Gold Eagle and the authors and editors with whom I have become acquainted. I think if push came to shove and there were some kind of intellectual property dispute between Gold Eagle and this website I would have a very strong leg to stand on in defense of this website.

I honestly have no idea what happens to the intellectual property once Gold Eagle folds. I have some educated guesses on what might happen to the Bolan properties, but they are only guesses.

With the Axler properties, the most likely thing is that they will simply fade into oblivion. There will literally be nobody left with any legal standing who will care enough to say anything to be about the site either way. In that case, the site goes on for years to come and I try to find some way to keep it relevant.

On the other hand, if another publisher comes along and takes ownership of the Axler intellectual property (and don't hold your breath on that one), that's where I become nervous. Because if I am the lawyer at a publishing house that just acquired a new piece of IP, the first thing I am going to want to do is enforce my IP rights to protect my new trademarks. In that case, I still think I am on fairly solid footing to push back if I get a Cease and Desist. But at a certain point I would have to do a cost/benefit analysis and make a reasonable choice.

If a white knight comes along and continues the Deathlands legacy, I hope that I can continue to be seen as a valuable resource to them and not as an infringer. I should hope that I could have a reasonable dialog with the new owners and reach an accommodation. But frankly, that is such a remote possibility right now that I can't really expend any energy on it. If another publisher comes along, it won't happen anytime soon. Think Easter at the very soonest, given how the industry works.

In the meantime, you've got another Alan Philipson book coming in a few months. You've got three more coming from Victor Milan, and if they are anything like Desolation Angels they will be real humdingers. On top of that, a little birdy has whispered in my ear that you will have some Chuck Rogers news in the not-too-distant future that you will be excited to hear. Mark Ellis continues to produce both graphic novels and high adventure prose. There is a cornucopia of great action writing out there, written by your favorite Axler authors, and the very best thing you can do is support them by buying their books and recommending them to your friends.

I ain't going anywhere, not anytime soon.

I hope the site stays around forever more, it's my favourite book related site on the web. "Exciting Chuck Rogers news". Better be a new book Mr Canuck.
And Mr Philipson we want some prose preferably in the shape of a book from you too.
Victor Milan has written some good Deathland's. The second half of "Nemesis" was amazing, so while it's not Chuck or Alan I'm not too disappointed. And I'm uber excited about his Dinosaur series coming out next year.

It's a shame to hear this news.  I've recently started posting on these forums and just found this thread.  Definitely a bummer.

For me the Deathlands experience is all relatively new.  I was lucky enough to get my hands on a mostly complete collection and have read 88 of the books over the last 2 1/2 to 3 years.  So I've covered most of it and was hoping for the best as I worked my way up to the current works.

Since the books branched into multiple authors it hasnt always been pleasant.  But overall the stories are generally a decent to excellent read.  And I have just loved the setting itself all the way through.  Characters as well (when they are acting in character).  Its been a very nice entertainment for me in recent years and I will be sad to see it end.

On behalf of all Canadians everywhere, to my Axler brethren in the U.S., apologies for GE being bought and the shop being closed up.

On a more serious note, yes, this is definitely terrible news to hear. I enjoyed reading the Outlanders series and the Deathlands series. My Boy Scout leader got me hooked on Deathlands, and then when Outlanders came out in 1996 (when I was in Grade 6), I got hooked on those as well.

BTW, can someone explain to me - or point me to a thread around here - about who Chuck Rogers and Alan Philipson are and why people seem to revere them? Thanks.

Both are  authors of Deathland's novels. And authors of GREAT DL books more importantly

Philipson was writing high quality action books way back when I started reading Gold Eagle stuff in 1984. He established his street cred with the SOB's series long before Deathlands came along.

Rogers has also written for GE for a long time, beginning with the awesome Executioner #208 Death Whisper, which came out in the mid 90's. His books in that series are consistently regarded as among the very best.

Check them out even if you are not a fan of those series, you might find you will enjoy their work on them.

As a long time member, though no longer posting, I too am sad at this news.  I guess it was foreshadowed in my copy of Polestar Omega.  There was no subscription card insert.  No point in soliciting subscriptions when you're not going to be around.

I hope they print enough copies so that we can all get our last ones.  After all these years, I wouldn't want to miss out on the last Deathlands story.

    The Phantom,

Thanks. I wrote for GE for a very long time, off and on since 1982. I'm sad about the closure because it means I won't get to keep working with people who have become dear friends (W-R!). I'm glad that END DAY turned out to be my final book in the series, though. I had a lot of fun with it. Go out with a bang, right?

I'm going to keep writing fiction, but not sure what as yet. I was negotiating a three-book deal with GE when the bottom fell out. One of the ideas was way too good to be a writer-for-hire novel, so I might do that--without the companions in it. GE never saw it. I have another novel half finished--not Slaughter Realms--something different. So, who knows, you might see more books from me in the future.

Hey, it's been a kick to interact with you and everyone else on this site. Best of luck to you all.

It would have been fitting if END DAY would have been the final DL title in the series.

I started reading Deathlands and Outlanders years and years ago back in early 2000 and I have read almost every single book.

I get online for the first time to look up my favorite book series of all time only to see that it is being shut down. How is this possible? It seems so popular and has a dedicated fan base.

The snake faces are going to win after all.

As far as Kane, Brigid, Grant and the rest of the Cerberus crew are concerned...no, the snake-faces are NOT going to win.

Hi all...been a very, very long time since I've visited the site. Probably about 7 years or so. Ron, Mark and some of the members from the start may remember me but perhaps not. The site has change much (read as improved) and likely a lot of my content has been pruned. I'm shocked my login still works and I'm back to the ranks of a 1 post newbie

It had been a long time since I had read a Deathlands or Outlanders book. They both got just too formulaic for more...no one could live up to the work that Mark did on Outlanders and those post-Ellis books in the Deathlands series went downhill for awhile and then dropped off a cliff. I still have every one of the paperback copies in my basement including PTH with the color art insert. I actually read a few DL books recently for grins and while not the crap (sorry, DL got really bad for awhile) that they were a while back, they're still lacking any feeling of spontaneity and the plots aren't very robust or dynamic. Same old, same old. Like a favorite old sneaker, they are fondly comfortable but still stink a bit

Anyway, I didn't drop in to belittle either series nor the authors. I just wanted to say that while I'm sorry both series are ending, I also think it's time. I started reading both at their inception, Pilgrimage to Hell in my late teens and Exile to Hell much later. I'd love to see each series reach some sort of finale to bring closure but based on what I'm reading, it's not going to happen for DL at least. I wrote some fan faction DL stories, some of which I discussed with Mark on this site but never really pursued it...sometimes I wish that I had. Maybe they can live on as fan fiction contributions. I know Ron was big on that - did you ever get anything published? I hope so.

Good to see Mark and others still active here and kudos to Ron for persevering with the site this whole time. A labor of love I'm sure.

I'll probably stop back in here and there to see what's going on and bore you some more with my ruminations.

P.S. It's still hard to believe that the world blew out 14 years ago...

Hiya Joe! Good to know you are still alive and kickin.

Hopefully Outlanders will continue under Mark's control, I agree that its time for DL to end.

Kane, Brigid, Grant, Domi, Lakesh and the rest will be back where they belong, too.
Does the copyright revert back to Mark. If so that would be awesome. Have decided to start reading OL.

How many more Dl's are there to come. Is Forbidden Trespass a Milan novel in which case we have another two to be revealed?

Forbidden Tresspass is definitely not Milan. I don't think Child of Slaughter is either, but I'm not sure on that.

Just searched Child of Slaughter on google and the only info was available on amazon-Japan! Has got the feel of a Travis/Helfer's novel. And if you read the blurb REALLY feels like the current CRAPPY one. Boo.

Was on Victor Milan's website and the last one is provisionally called Wrath Child. Funny coincidence his web master is called Ron Miles, go figure !-)
Which brings me too an idea to save DL. Milan and GRRRRRRRRRRRR Martin are best buds so we get him to be seen reading or big up the Dl novel cue epic sales receipts, hey presto DL Ol and Mack Bolan is back.

Child of Slaughter was written by a new writer. I can't reveal his name as I don't know whether he's writing under a pseudonym or is using his given name.

I have not been to the board in a very long time (prob a few years) and now late in the game. I was a bit shocked when I had read the sites monthly email about Golden Eagle closing. That actually really bothered me. Though I may have dropped out of the DL series, I still support it to one degree or another

I remember learning of the series by finding one book for sale in a certain bookshop by a very old job of mine sometime in the early to mid 1990's (Damned if I could recall which one it was). I loved what I read. I hit a few used book shops after that to check out a few more titles and was completely hooked.

I do hope that the last DL novel will have some sort of closure to it, though after reading all of the posts in this thread an option like that may be doubtful.

Either way damn shame about GE

To hear that Victor Milan is doing the LAST DL for GE which could mean the last DL ever.. Make me really sad.

His work is okay, but nothing like AP's or Chuck's. LE SIGH.

Haven't been to the forums here for so long, but have still been reading every issue of DL as it comes out. Have also been trying to fill in any gaps I have had in the series from day one.
GE closing shop, no closure to the series? Awwww, frack ! I'm with, thedupleman. A proper ending to the series needs to happen. What can I do to help that along?
Of course I would rather see it continue, even if with another publisher.

I started this series many many years ago. And have enjoyed the trail, I have every single Deathlands book and would like as others to see a decent ending to the series if that happens. Or if another publisher picks it up then it may continue. But my real thought would be for a good ending and move on to some new series and characters. No matter which way it goes I will still be around.

Having gone back and read all of this thread, checked out Mr. Ellis' link to GE folding it's wings and hurriedly going to Amazon to pre-order the last books, I have to say ... I will still miss the series, both DL and OL and even the odd Mack Bolan I picked up over the years.
I'm not a writer in any sense of the word, ok 1 published poem, but I am a prolific reader. Just for the reading.
I haven't become knowledgeable in the intricacies of publishing or the infighting and takeovers of various publishing co.s
I never even had an inkling of the Dark Days that rocked the publishing world a while back.
Until OL became Ellis-less, I enjoyed this "grandson" of DL almost as much as Ryan and co.
For me though, Deathlands bacame as comfortable to slip into as my favorite pair of sneakers. Only once did I actually have to put down an issue because I did not recognize the characters at all. I'm sure you all know which ultimate stinker I am talking about.
Despite this comfort I derived from this series, I do agree on one point. Like your favorite 'ol Yeller, you've loved him and cared for him, but he needs to be put down. I would wish to see him go on but that would be cruel. At the very least, though, pun intended, He needs to go out with a BANG !

'ol DL shouldn't go out with a whimper.

Thank you Ron for building and manning this ship for so long. I will be stopping in now and then if just to see the direction you settle on.

An ever Apologetic Canadian reader, ha.

Hello fellow Deathlanders, been a while since i've been on. Lot going on. And thanks for updating my password Ron.

I would just like to say how much this saddens me to hear that the Deathlands will be no more, been reading them since I was 19 and am now 43, no-matter what was going on in my life. And it will feel like something is missing without them...But to all the authors I would like to say...thank you for giving what you had to the continuing Deathlands Saga and with that I am looking forward to the upcoming novels post-haste.

With that being said, Good Show I say!  I SAY GOOD SHOW!

Well, I read my first book in '92...followed the series for a good 16 years after that. I did get kind of slack in the last few years but it looks like I will have to find all the missing titles knowing that there is an end in sight.
