He lived a good portion of his life in New York City. He used to love baseball and was quite athletic before the disease hit.
Late in October of the year 2000 Richard was chosen as a candidate for cryonic freezine because he possessed specialized knowledge of the Gateways and was able to repair the gateway's themselves, as well as being able to tell if a gateway was malfunctioning. Suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) he was put under in hopes that a cure would be found and he could be saved. He was put under in an air force base in Nebraska.
He possesses a working knowledge of Russian and is able to speak it and read it. Though anyone who hears him speaking would instantly know that he was a foreigner.
He had a very difficult time accepting the reality of the situation he now finds himself in, and the fact that everything, and everyone he knows has been dead for nearly a century. After finding a book by Edgar Allen Poe, he nearly loses his mind and reverts to his childhood. Krysty manages to help bring him back from the brink of insanity. It appears that his ALS is in remission at this point.
He is a believer in peace and absolutely refused to carry a weapon after recovering from his time in cryonic suspension. He is forced to take a life just after the oil refinery in Snakefish is blown up. He had to use a shot gun on Marianne Mote to save Ryan's life.
After Krysty damages the gateway door when it was jammed shut, Richard knows that he will be able to repair damaged gateway if they are able to find tools to do so. His remission has ended and he knows that the terminal phase is beginning. He had to head into the ruins of Moscow with Ryan and Krysty in order to locate the appropriate tools. He gets worse and worse and several times begs that they leave him behind to die.
Eventually they located the tools in a museum, as well as the Flag. Ryan manages to steal both and they escape from Moscow. Back at the gateway, Richard is able to help them repair the gateway. In his final minutes he talks Doc into singing the Star Spangled Banner for him. He finally dies peacefully as they end the song for him.
