Now that I have completed my updates and fixed all of the styling issues (at least the ones that I am aware of), I have turned on a new feature of the forum software.  Effective immediately, all of the forums (except for the custom forums for Groups) require moderation on any posts from newer users.  There is a threshold at which a user will no longer require to have their posts moderated, but until a user hits that threshold any new post has to be seen and approved by a moderator.  I may or may not tweak the setting of what that threshold is as time goes by.

Basically I am trying to strike a balance.  I do not want to close registration on the site or discourage new users.  At that same time, I want to prevent the obvious troll activity that has caused problems here over the years.  My hope is that by going to moderated posts I will actually encourage more participation by removing the fear of drive-by sniping.  It will also hopefully remove the motivation for particular problem users to come back under multiple identities, since none of their posts will ever see the light of day again.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to raise them here.  My goal is not to stifle anyone.  My only goal is to try to create a more welcoming environment and encourage participation.

Does this mean you have the ability to detect sockpuppet identities before the rest of us see those posts?

Hopefully this site will be more civil with these new changes, thanks Ron.

I don't necessarily have a magic bullet, but they are fairly predictable. Even if I don't recognize them immediately, I can at least catch them before the go full-blown nuclear.

Bumping this thread back up because we have lots of new users lately.

As a reminder: If you are a new user, all of your posts are moderated and must be approved by me before they go live. This is not a value judgement about you, it is what I feel to be a necessary measure to help reduce or eliminate some of the trolling behavior that has damaged this forum in the past. Once a user crosses a certain threshold (which is completely automated, and has nothing to do with my "liking" or "trusting" the user), then their posts are no longer moderated.

In practical terms, this means that if you are a new user you might post something and not see that post go live right away while at the same time seeing posts from other users go live that are newer than yours. This does not mean that I am ignoring you or that I am approving some posts but ignoring others. It just means that some more established users who don't require moderation have posted, but I haven't had time to moderate your posts yet.

I try to be as prompt as possible in moderating posts, but please bear in mind that I do have a full time job and a family. My job requires travel, so it is entirely possible that when you submit a post I might be on an airplane and completely offline for a few hours. Or I might even (heaven forbid) be out on a date with my wife. I promise to do my best in not leaving you hanging for too long.

As always, if you have any issues or questions you are more than welcome to send me a message via the Messaging system here on the site or to send me an email.
