Do i need to get into Outlanders?

    I have recently got into Deathland's in a big way some 14yrs after picking up my first book and was wondering am i missing out on another great series in Outlanders?

    Yes, I am. I also copy edited a fair number of the earlier Outlanders books, and they are very exciting reads.

    Agreed, Outlanders is an excellent series. Be aware, though, that it is a very different kind of series with a very different style. Where Deathlands is a warrior survivalist series, Outlanders is all about high adventure with a science fiction bent. Although Outlanders is set 100 years after Deathlands, the two series really have very little in common aside from the use of the same redoubts and mat-trans system. One strong point of Outlanders is that it has very strong continuity, and the characters actually do gradually evolve and change over time. This is because there was a single primary writer for the vast majority of the first 45 books. Although the original author is no longer writing the series, in the past dozen or so books published there has been two authors who have worked very closely with each other to maintain continuity.

    Outlanders is my favorite series. I recommend reading them in order, at least for the first 26 books, but there is enough series recap provided in the novels where you can get a gist of what events might have occurred in any books you might miss.
    There is an overall storyline to go along with the books on their own, which is why your best experience is to read them in order.

    After book 26, there are other writers that contribute to the series from time to time, so the overall storyline is contained in the books written by the original writer and creator of the series. This overall storyline comes to a conclusion with the book Dark Goddess. You can see who wrote what books in the book listings on this site, as well as read reviews on them.

    Thanks Phantom, that was most helpfull. Just got to wait for the radblasted book to turn up now.
    It's most annoying that you cant just go into a bookshop and pick the buggers up.
    The big bookshop in the u.k doesnt seem to have any ever
    Can you get them in mainstream shops in the states and canada?

    Having read nearly all of them myself my recommendation would be to check the author listings on this site and go with the ones by Mark Ellis. 

    They are far and wide the best of the series, which goes to figure since he created it!

    You can find the new ones, of course, but older copies are kind of hard to find (same with DL books) - usually all you can get are the books no one wants to read.

    amazon.uk aint too bad, although can be a bit pricey for second hand books. Charity shops aint bad either.

    The original writer and creator (that's me, Mark Ellis ) does have a few favorites. They are, in no particular ranking of favortism:

    Savage Sun, Omega Path, Parallax Red, Iceblood, Armageddon Axis, Hell Rising, Doom Dynasty, Tigers of Heaven, Tomb of Time, Talon and Fang, Children of the Serpent, Cerberus Storm and Skull Throne.

    Very helpful read, I was wondering why on graphic audios web page they listed DL as Post Apocalypse and Outlanders as Sci-Fi. Also glad to hear there continued from book to book. The only down side for me is as I listen to the audio books, Outlanders are at all truck stops for the most part, but for every outlanders book, theres 20 DL books, so might be hard to collect them in order

    Because the primary focus of Deathlands is it being about a group of warrior survivalists making their way through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. 

    On the other hand Outlanders, while set in the same world, takes place 100 years further in the future and the primary focus is high adventure with a strong element of science fiction. The nuclear apocalypse plays virtually no role in the stories aside from being distant background.

    As I said somewhere once before, describing Outlanders as a post-apocalyptic series would be like describing Deathlands as a post-Civil War series. While technically true, the event described is so distant in the story's past that it has no relevant meaning.
