Admittedly, one must ignore tactical reality to enjoy Deathlands novels.  One could discuss that for days - for example, nobody would carry nothing but a Smith J frame (like Krysty) when they routinely get into firefights and other weapons are available - but the armament of the protagonists is still an interesting subject.  I've fired everything they routinely carry except the ZKR551 (they do exist but I can't find one), and the LeMat.  JB's S&W 4000 would correctly be referred to as a S&W 3000.  I hunt whitetails with black powder and it is fun, I'm thinking of acquiring a replica LeMat..  What would you choose to carry if you were with them?  Factoring in the difficulty of acquiring less popular calibers of ammunition in such conditions, I would opt for my AR-10, Glock 17, and Ruger GP-100.   With the GP-100 revolver, I could load cast bullets and even use black powder if I couldn't get anything else.  Of course, I'd roll with an M-240B if I could get my hands on one and had means to transport it and ammo for it (best weapon we had in Afghanistan).

In the old days this sort of post would have had me running to find my fire proof pants as it would have been jumped on as a topic that has been played out to death and beyond on the previous incarnations of this board. Now I would be suprised if anyone (except me) even bothered to reply to this sort of post.

I'm not saying its a stupid question but its subject matter has been used time and time again by trolls to start flame wars between members.

My toolsof choice would be a black widow catapult, bag of marbles or 1/4" BB's, a phrase book of harsh language written in 15 different languages and a sharpened mango.

Oh, I'm from the UK and we are not allowed to play with grown up toys anymore in case we hurt one another

    Welcome aboard,

After so many years of it I don't think any of us 'Old Guard' cares much any more about these ancient arguements...

I don't think Gold Eagle cares much either...IMO, the editors let Mark slip away because they were so afraid that readers  followed his work and not the series he created and now they've turned OL into just another generic GE series that they think can plug any writer or any hack into and figure nobody will know the difference like they did with DL and the Bolan books.

I haven't read a DL in years or any of the Bolan books either...apparently if you're not buying Rogue Angel Gold Eagle could care less about their audience.

I do miss the energy and fun discussions that used to be part of Jamesaxler.com though.

You know you are so right on every point you made here.

I still read DL and the last one was not too bad overall.

I am also on my third try at getting through the latest OL, "Pantheon of Vengeance", sorry Doug but its just not doing it for me and reads like a Battletech book.

I too miss the fun of the discussions us "Old Guard" used to have in times gone by...

    A few things.

    1. If they get the writers from the Bolan  and DL books to do OL it will take the books in a new direction. and maybe Michael goodwin will give the novel 5 stars.

    2. Maybe you should start reading the bolan and stony Man Farm books.

1 OL didn't need a new direction it was going just fine the way it was and the real fans of the series knew this. Sadly GE didn't listen to the people who payed out good money to buy the books and have now turned it into another "guest writer" fest. In no time it will be another DL with no continuity, no character development and teen storylines.

2 I give GE too many of my pounds (£) as it is.

Absolutely. Rather than alienate the hard-core fans of OL who probably make up most of the buying readership and not casual readers, it makes more sense to mend fences with Mark.

Everybody wins, mainly the OL fans. I'm not buying any more OL or GE books once Mark's final OL novel is published and I'm not alone in feeling that way.

Mark is the creator of the series and brings the special magic that no plug-in writer of the month can ever hope to match.

See my coment above Re: Pantheon...

Sadly I think Mark has done with OL and moved on to bigger and better things. Brigit, Kane, Grant et al. will stop aging yet become senile as more and more "want to be writers" jump on the bandwagon.

Who knows one day we may even see a petrol powered interphaser

    1. OL doesn't need a new direction. It was given one after Dark Goddess. Michael Goodwin AKIA One Eye Q almost always gave OL books 5 stars until he was booted from here for posting lies about people.

    2. I already put in my time reading Bolan and Stony Man books...then I grew up.

Well, I haven't exactly been following the DL series much of late.  Only picked up the recent Plague Lords, Empire of Xibalba, Book I, recently and found it a good read.  Hopefully, the group will re-arm with something different following their adventure.

As for what I would choose for a firearm, that would be more difficult.  I had a GP-100, specifically the  KGP-161 (6" SS) that I traded off years ago.  It would make a good choice.  As a long-gun, I would probably end up with a pump-action shotgun, likely a 870 Remington or Mossberg 500/590 series.
