"Surely was. He had chill-cred, did Great-Grandpa Ryan. His son just held what there was. By then, around the mid of the century, there was some trouble from the Walkers and the Takers."

Krysty nodded. "Heard my Uncle Tyas McCann speak of them. Said they was the descendants of the Levelers and the Diggers."

    "Never heard nothing 'bout them."

Do the books ever go into what Walkers and Takers and Levelers and Diggers are?

They don't follow the naming pattern (First syllable and a ie, e.g. Swampies and Muties) which is kind of intriguing.

Boy, I wish Mark Ellis would have written a book two generations before Deathlands. People coming out of their bunkers, some trying to rebuild America or their community. Some trying to collect the new wealth, stockpiling gas and guns. All trying to survive.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to write it.

Probably most fans would prefer to have Mark Ellis return to Outlanders and continue writing the characters and series he created.
"It's better to have a blaster and not need it than to need it and--" "Oh, spare me," Brigid said irritably. (Kane and Brigid Baptiste from Armageddon Axis)

Which book is this a quote from? I must be getting old as I don't recall reading it.
    ===============================
Billy Fish: He wants to know if we are gods.
Peachy Carnehan: Not gods - Englishmen. The next best thing.

Sorry, that's a quote from my favorite lovable talking dog comedy, and James Axler book thus far, Homeward Bound.

Nope. I read Homeward Bound, but that was nigh on 15 years ago. They're certainly not mentioned in any other books. Takers/Diggers, I imagine, are an early name for ghoulies (corpsetakers/gravediggers). I'm not sure what Levelers/Walkers could be, though.

LJ was still finding his legs in the first 5-6 books - there are plenty of things he mentions that are retconned or vanish entirely, like the bandolier of leaf-bladed throwing knives Krysty has in Red Holocaust. It's likely these were another of those ideas that he tossed in and later discarded or altered.

I have to agree with you, there are many things in the early books that are now dead ends. I believe Laurence placed them there as story threads for future books, some he picked up on and others he never got around to.

I think Krysty's knives (being leaf bladed) became Jak's trademark when he was established so he dropped from her to avoid confusion.

There are many unanswered questions here:

    Yeah - that.

Most of those questions have either been resolved since he wrote that page, or they really weren't worth asking in the first place. I'd like to know who built the Lonesome Gulch gate (and where it's located), and what happened to turn the bayous near Jak's home into a desert (someone suggested maybe a space station crashed there?). And what happened to Sonja Wroth? Did that ever get resolved?
