An absolutly amazing Book called Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I cannot reccomend this book enough to people. Full of Geek sheik. If you like the 80's,computer games and Dystopian Futures this book is for you.

Jim, was Deathland's and Outlander's ever Mainstream over here? By that I mean did Waterstones etc ever stock them?

Yep!

I found the first book in WH Smith whilst at Polytechnic in Middlesbrough way back when, and then picked up the other books up to book 12 after that. They were published by Harlequin UK which ceased to be just after book 12 was published here. After that I had to go to getting them from Harlequin in the US.

I've got all the DL books and all Marks OL's. Didn't like the post Mark books and to me the story was complete so stopped.

What is our favorite what? Books or series?

I really like both, but Deathlands was the original. So, despite its current issues, ie, Ryan not going on a quest for his lost son, Dean, more logic in weaponry and tactics, clothing, etc...I still like it better than OL.

 

I like the unpredictability of the matt-trans jumps. I still love that concept, as well as the world being still messed up with muties everywhere. Muties have gone to the wayside in OL.

I think I like Dl better too but to be fair I have only read the first three OL's. I think Ryan should definitely go looking for Dean but where would he start? Could anyone see a Dean led spin off?
I think it is time to kill off one of the main character's, for them to be in so many "adventure's" and all survive every time kind off dumbs down the series IMO. But who would you let go? I used to say Doc but he's kind off grown on me over the last wee while. Mildred? I know a lot of the fan's hate her. Ryan? Krysty? Don't even look at my man Jak!!!
And what would you lot think about the novels being written P.O.V style? From just the one perspective?

Ryan is a father, so his love for his son would start SOMEWHERE. I mean, in that crappy book in which they ran into each other would be the best place to start. I just wished the authors and the editors would pay attention to the deep love and respect that Ryan and Dean had, along with the rest of the group.

 

In stead of treating his kidnapping like a stranger. It just shows us fans - yeat gain! - just how lackadaisical GE and their worker bees think of us fans as being intelligent. I mean, does any fan here think Ryan and the companions would merely shrug their shoulders and think Dean's kidnapping was just another one of those unfortunate things that happen in the deathlands?

 

No, I don't think so!

 

Ryan is made of sterner, and honorable stuff. And Krysty's motherly instincts would drive that home even further.

He may not shrug and say "oh well," but Ryan's a pragmatist over all - this has been demonstrated time and time again. He knew good and damn well that when Sharona took Dean through the mat-trans, he'd never find them. As he often says, "There's no putting spilled blood back in the body", so there was no point in moping about it - he knew Dean would be okay, and he knew they'd meet up someday. In the meantime, he had his own and his friends' survival to worry about.

I always thought that Dean being taken out of the story was so that when he finally got back together he wouldn't be so father worshiping. That he would be his own man,if not Ryan's equal then certainly more independent that he was before he left with his mom. I was glad to see that was the way he was written when he came back.
As for Ryan going looking for him I think Ryan didn't want to risk all their lives on what could have been a life long quest.

For my small questions -
1) I have always wondered why the companions have never added body armor to their regular gear.
2) It has been one hundred years since the war how many generations have there been I mean Ryan and JB are nearly 40 years old if their parents were in there 20 when they were born just how many generations have past ? Could their grand parents have been first generation survivors ?
