Did anyone else notice that in crater lake the town was named Ginsburg Falls, and their motto was "Walk the line and you'll do fine". Then, in ice and fire, Rick Ginsburg said of Snakefish; " Friendly little town, as long as you walk the line".
Just kinda makes a person wonder...

Welcome aboard and happy Christmas to you.
Its been a while since I read the early books of the series -I think I will start again from the front in 2010 and get some quality DL time in once more.
The early Laurence James DL books are full of little gems like that some designed to make the reader think others there as a "tip of the hat" to friends, family etc.

As for the little "gems", yes he did. I love some of the jokes and references he used. For instance; in keepers of the sun, Jak says " Well, time to go watch a man rip his guts out." I was taking a drink while listening to that one on a GA audiobook, and, the guages in the Freightliner were soon covered in a fine spray of diet pepsi (from my nose! ouchie!) as I burst into laughter.

I have to say that Jak's comment to the scientist inside Crater Lake made me spit tea across the room the first time I read it. The Scientist spends several lines telling him who she is and what she is in charge of, Jak replies:
"I'm Jak Lauren and I f#%k pigs"

Haha! I remember that quote, I reread "Crater Lake" like a month ago. Do u remember in that book that the gang discovers that Jak is somewhat of a jolt head and they made him get rid of it? I am a new member, it is good finding other Deathlands fans. It is the best book series ever! |

happy holiday.
Yeah Jak did have a bit of a problem but was quickly turned away from it by the
other members of the group. I believe it was an attempt by Laurence to point
out to folk reading them that it was wrong to use drugs.
The group also discover a lot about Doc in this book too, I did feel so sorry
for him in those scenes and thought them some of the best that Laurence wrote
in all his DL books.
Although I do enjoy DL books (not as much as I used to now) I can't say they
are far from being on a par with other book series like those by Patrick
O'Brien (Aubrey–Maturin series), Alexander Kent (Bolitho series), R.A Salvatore
(Drizzt series). But that’s just a personal view.

I would like 2 b pals w/ u guys who participate in this site and review the books( One eye Chills, the Phantom, GuapoPogi, Ron Miles, & u ) 3az)3aziah, thank u 4 responding 2 this die-hard Deathlands fan of 14 years.) All right, here it goes: I am a fan of all types of books: fiction, non-fiction, adventure, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, western, & yes, even romance novels. The best books that I have ever read r Deathland novels both by James Axler & the "rest"(Andy Boot, Alan Philipson, & Nick Pollata.) I know this next comment is going 2 tick u guys off, but while Outlanders is good, it is no Deathlands. Yes, I said it & i will tell u y. Without Deathlands, there would b no Outlanders, and let us remember that the greatest author of all time James Axler( Laurence James) did not write 1 Outlanders book. U fellas seem 2 let the lack of editing, bad grammar, & incorrect spelling ruin a story 4 u. While I agree that the Editors & authors should do their job, I will pay attention 2 the story more. By the way, some of u guys need 2 work on ur spelling & grammar as well, look in the mirror before u criticize, I am not perfect myself, but I call it as I c it. Read my file & c what difference I mean between the 2 series. My dream is 2 b an author & i have already started on my Deathlands book. I will also post reviews 4 the books that I have read. Thank u guys 4 letting me participate & Happy new Year. By the 3 Kennedys, am I now... Joseph Jordan or Cort Strasser?

This is not twitter or a text message, you are not limited in the number of characters you can use, so please - if you want to be taken seriously and have genuine conversations here on the board, quit using such extreme abbreviations ("...going 2 make u guys...& i will tell u y...as I c it..." et cetera, et cetera.
Welcome aboard, by all means stick around and contribute. Just think about how you are presenting yourself, particularly if you want to be taken seriously as an author.

Yes, everybody knows Laurence James never wrote a single Outlanders book...he had quit writing for Gold Eagle a couple of years before the first Outlanders book was published, over a dozen years ago.
The Outlanders series was created and written up until recently by Mark Ellis. He has written more books as James Axler than any other writer...Laurence James didn't create Deathlands, a writer named Jack Adrian did.
No, there would have definitely been an Outlanders series without Deathlands. As has been posted here uncountable times over the years, all the basics of the Outlanders series was created first and the DL connection was stuck onto it much later.

Well, you know )3az)3aziah, it seems like when I read the posts, reviews, and forums it seems everybody stomps on Deathlands and just praises Outlanders. I told you I was going to get you guys ticked, but hey, it had to be said. If you guys do not like Deathlands quit freakin' reading them, dang. As for my writing, my seventy-eight-year old grandpa can understand what I am writng and believe you me he is senile as can be, he said he personally would not write the way that I write, but he says it is not difficult to read.

I have not read a post from anybody that said that it has been said "uncountable" times that the Outlanders idea was thought of before Deathlands. Today is the first time that I heard that. Deathlands came out in 1986 with Adrian and Axler. Then in 1997, Mark Ellis took the reins and made the Outlanders, that seems like a more believable passage than that of Axler and Adrian getting their idea from Mark Ellis and creating the Outlanders era first and then let us throw in the Deathlands storyline first taking place in the year 2097( Pilgrimmage to Hell.) This reminds me of the Star Wars saga, where Lucas put the last 3 stories first, not saying you guys are not right, but it seems ridiculous and far fetched. I knew that Laurence did not create Deathlands, it was Jack Adrian( Christopher Lowder I believe his real name was.) I do my homework, but I am also hear to learn.

The entire Outlanders concept was developed by Mark and pitched to Gold Eagle as a new, ongoing series completely unrelated to anything. In fact, if you have the Outlanders books, the setting as of Children of the Serpent is pretty much the way the series was originally pitched.
For whatever reason (marketing mostly, I should think), Gold Eagle decided that they wanted the series to be a direct sequel to Deathlands, and so there were numerous changes made in order to forge that link. Personally, I think it would have been better if they had not done that. The two series are completely different styles (post-apocalyptic warrior survivalist fiction vs. high adventure science fiction), with pretty polarizing fan bases. There just doesn't seem to be much overlap between Deathlands fans and Outlanders fans.
Outlanders has historically had a much more vocal group of supporters here, primarily because it was created and written almost entirely by a single author for more than a decade and that author was a frequent visitor here. Nowadays Mark has his own website with its own forum, and most of his fans have followed him there.

But I'll occasionally venture from my lair to respond to one thing or another posted here...or to remind people that facts trump assumptions every single time.
The genesis of Outlanders has been posted here many, many times over the years...perhaps not "uncountable", but many, many times.
I repeat: Many.
I had toyed with the idea of making a series of posts here about the "Secret Origins" of Outlanders, but I don't have the time or the interest or the whatever.
But I'll post some basic facts for those who came in late.
Fact 1: Back in late 1995, after writing a couple of well-received Deathlands novels, I was asked to create a new series with the "James Axler" byline on it. The first version I turned in was set in contemporary times and was much closer to what the TV series Stargate SG-1 eventually evolved into...albeit, the Stargate TV series didn't debut on Showtime until summer of 1997.
Fact 2: My first version was rejected because the Axler name was associated with the post-nuke sub-sub-sub-sub genre.
Fact 3. Keeping as much stuff from the original proposal as I could, I drafted a second, post-nuke version. I was asked to come up with stuff that was basically copies of mat-trans units under different names, so I suggested just connecting the new series with Deathlands (at that point called alternately Outrunners and Aftermath), making it something of a loose sequel, set a century later.
Fact 4: Outlanders has been consecutively published for over a dozen years now...basically it is the vision of one writer, unlike all the other series Gold Eagle publishes. Significantly, Gold Eagle spent no money on promoting Outlanders over the years, unlike Rogue Angel, on which they spent a fortune...not just to promote the series, but to make the cover model a celebrity (I still wonder whose girlfriend she was/is).
Outlanders was left to find its audience on its own. The fact that it has lasted as long as it has shows that it did find its own audience.
Also, unlike Rogue Angel and the other mega blockbuster recently produced by Gold Eagle, Room 59 (yeah, that's some sarcasm), Outlanders was not a product of the revolving door system of writers or the "creativity by commitee" process.
Fact 5. Nobody has praised Outlanders and stomped DL in a post in a very long time, and when that did happen, it was almost always in response to a post stating something ugly or untrue about Outlanders first.
Fact 6: Some people like DL more than Outlanders. Some like Outlanders more than DL. Some people are my fans, other people are fans of a series, regardless of who writes the individual books.

Mark, Cathy here. Rogue Angel isn't marketed as a Gold Eagle product, it's marketed as a Romance product. Just my 2 cents. Harlequin promotes Romance products. GE is and always has been the poor cousin.

That's funny, all the Rogue Angel books I have have the Gold Eagle logo on them. Under that is Science Fiction or Fiction, no mention of romance, or the name Harlequin on the spine. RA is included in the shipments with the other GE books if readers subscribe to all the GE series.
The GE blog includes Rogue Angel along with all the other GE series. No mention of RA as a romance series there.

Clearly what Cathy was pointing out is that, although Rogue Angel is published with the GE imprint, it's marketing is done and paid for from the Harlequin budget as opposed to GE's budget.
