Nah. It's become an icon. Besides, sometimes you can see more than Ryan's boots on the cover - I've noted some of those instances on the wiki.

    Harry,

Just out of curiosity, is English your first language?

Honestly? No. It helps define the series. If the DL covers started looking like OL covers, people would have a harder time telling them apart.

Personally, I wish at least some of the covers fully showed what all the characters look like, to my knowledge Jak and Doc have never truly been shown what they look like.. Though now many years later, people are used to the leg plus background images.. I wish that the Outlanders guy had done them all from the start.

Credit where credit is due and setting the record straight time--again.

One of the ways I tried to differentiate Outlanders from DL was in the area of cover art.

Although professionally and beautifully rendered by the uber-talented Mike Herring, I was never fond of many of the early covers because they were almost interchangeable with those of DL, particularly in the choice of the props and palette.

Mike employed the symbol of the Archon Directorate as something of a signature instead of the DL daisy, but the composition was still very reminiscent of DL covers.

I provided detailed descriptions of the cover elements--my experience in writing comics coming to the fore--and I often asked that the main cast be featured prominently.

I also wanted the lead female character of the individual novel to featured but that didn't happen much.

It wasn't until I sent Mike the cover description of Purgatory Road that I became pretty durn insistent about it, arguing that we needed some sort of visual "branding" of Kane, Brigid and Grant.

We discussed cover art one afternoon on the telephone and agreed that in the future, most of the books would feature the main female character of that particular novel, sort of a homage to the great Robert McGinnis and his memorable women for so many paperback series covers during the 60s and 70s.

    http://images.search.yaho...cginnis+cover+artist

I wanted to go in this direction for a couple of reasons...mainly, books with beautiful scantily clad women on the covers attracted my attention far more than generic portraits of sweaty, constipated-looking guys with clenched teeth gripping .50 caliber penis extenders.

The main reasaon...it was a simple, straightforward way of differentiating Outlanders from DL at a glance.

Unfortunately, Mike left GE shortly thereafter and was unable to implement this approach. He was replaced by artist Cliff Nielsen and starting with Dragoneye (the cover description of Devil In the Moon was already in-house) the OL covers were essentially "branded" by beautiful women taking center stage.

They were referred to as "Danger Babes."

I know the approach worked--at least for a time--because the sales went up. For example, the numbers on Far Empire and Cerberus Storm were very high.

For the most part, Cliff Nielsen has done a fabulous job, although I was never 100 percent happy with the way he presented Grant, since the man was never described as having a shaven head.

It wasn't until after I was prevented (not left, not stopped, not quit) from continuing to write Outlanders that this branding technique became less frequent.

Did you ever have a chance to communicate with Nielsen?

Thanks Jak2 for that info, and I find that I agree with you.. Sorry to those used to the way things are, but the outlander covers and some of the DL covers is the way to go IMO.. A leg don't do much for me lol, and IMO theres clearly a skill difference from the Ryan leg shots vs many outlander covers.. call me crazy lol

The new OL cover for Infestation Cubed sure isn't going to help sell any! Worst cover yet! WTF?

As of book 100, every character has appeared on the cover of at least one book. The Trivia section of the wiki has all the appearances listed; Jak's face is on Downrigger Drift, and Doc's is on Baptism of Rage, as well as the back cover of Way of the Wolf (along with Mildred).

I wouldn't say Infestation Cubed is *bad* so much as "wildly different than normal". Just going from the cover, it looks like it's about a Cthuluesque invasion from beyond space and time.

    Harry -

First and foremost, this IS NOT an attack. This is a statement explaining why the question was asked in the first place.

Baz isn't the only person here who's had difficulty reading and understanding your posts, I have had to re-read most of your posts at least twice or more to figure out what you're trying to say.

When you post things like gud, cud, wud, rite, etc. you are causing a fairly significant portion of the other members of the forum to wonder things like Baz asked.... if English is your first language.

Others have wondered if you might not be dyslexic, or if you might not be, well, there is no polite way to post it but I'm sure you get the gist of what is being said here.

Again, this is NOT AN ATTACK. This is just, as I said, a way to clarify Baz's question that he posed to you.

If this is simply a matter of using the archaic netspeak, then so be it. But I have noticed that there is a very distinct drop off in the amount of people who use this short hand way of communicating, and as the years progress fewer and fewer people are using it.

If it's just a matter of not being able to spell very well, I would suggest using Firefox. It has a built in spell checker, and it has helped me numerous times when I've made posts across the net. Yes, I am a professional writer as well as editor, but even I make spelling mistakes from time to time.

So, there is your explanation as to Baz's question.

Take the post in the manner it was made, as an explanation, not an attack.

Probably no one's said anything because they don't want to seem rude. Your posts are rather difficult to read, though - some capitalization and proper spelling would go a long way.

"Archaic netspeak" is using phonetic spelling instead of writing the whole word out - "rite", "nite", "wud", "cud", etc.

Poor old Baz, he gets the blame again...

It was Mike that said he had difficulty reading his posts here not me, BUT I do have to agree that any form of text "speak" or "type" or whatever the hell you want to call it is very difficult to read.

Harry, can I ask like Outlanders above has that you at least try to use a spell checker or get an appropriate adult to check your spelling before you hit the submit button? It will keep things here a lot more civil.

i am sorry that i have made what i typed hard to read, i have not had this problem on other places i have been on and will try to be more clerer in what i type in future. i will also try to use a spell checker to make sure what i type is write. i dont use firefox and the board owner has said that using word makes lots of problems when you copy and paste from it.

baz or whatever it is your name is with a silly braket thing and number at the front i dont need a adult to look at what i type and for your informastion i bet i am old enough to be your pa so dont get smart with me.

Yeah, let's drop this shall we? I'll lock the thread if I need to but I'd rather not.
