Well now thats all done, I hate to disagree with the guy who started this thread and the others who all say Hugh Jackman for Ryan, but Hugh is simply too short! Ryan is supposed to stand 6'2". Otherwise Hugh would have been fantastic. The boy who plays Lucius Malfoy (white hair) would be great as Jak. Rebecka Rominjn for Kristy. Perhaps Gerard Butler for Ryan? (he is tall enough) I love Vivica A fox for Mildred. Doc eter Fonda or Donal Sutherland? Trader:Scott Glenn J.B. Dix:any skinny short guy w/glasses who can act? Dean:The werefolf kid Jacob Black from Twilight?

If only a movie was made 5/10 years ago.
A Indiana Jones Harrison Ford would have been perfect for JB, Fedora hat and all
Not to mention Clint Eastwood chomping a cigar as The Trader!
The problem lies in how do you make all these books a movie series/tv series?
Where do you start? Wheres the intro?
5- minutes to setup the backround of the holocaust, what happened at skydark, how north america changed and current conditions..
Then do you get straight to mcCandess(forgot how to spell his name) and his excursion into the Darks or Scale and his gang eying Traders massive convoy.
One qualm I disliked about the books was that we got so little of Traders life and how he built his war wags and the missions he went on etc while bringing some kindness to people who needed it and chilling the slaggers who needed that..
theres so many different directions one could take this.
If done properly it could actually be a pretty massive hit in the mainstream.....but it must be done properly, and not like that 2003 movie.

Trader was written as an Enigma, someone who Ryan aspired to be. He chose to keep his past a secret revealing only what he wanted people to know but making it so fantastic you never knew if he was telling the truth or telling some sor tor elaborate tale. Even his original disapearance was shrouded in mystery, was he ill, did he choose to disappear? Who knows. I once asked Lawrence if Trader was maybe some sort of military freezie, as he knew so much about the location of redoubts and all sorts of tech. Again -like trader, Lawrence just told me "...who knows, maybe one day we will find out. But would you believe him if he said he was..."

I know, and thats EXACTLY why it bothered me so much, because my curiosity was massivly peaked.
Trader remained my favourite character due to that shrouded mystery surrounding him.
The idea of him being a military Freezie is a good one, but I like the thought of him being in his late teens with his friend marsh and running from cannies or w.e, stumbling into a stockpile....and slowly uncovering secrets and knowledge about the predark world, growing from what he was conditioned(getting as much jack as possible and trading weapons) into more of a robin hood type character so to speak...thus beginning the legend of THE trader, and not just any trader. He was a hardass, but a hardass who was fair when warrented, and not geedy and lusting for power like all the others.
Maybe Marsh folsom was the freezie instead? didnt he know all about computers, reading, writing, how to use lat/long and UTM on maps? ...just a thought

I agree 100% that the Trader is the most interesting character equal to Ryan alone. I think this thread says at the beginning that it needs to be done way better than the 2003 movie as you state. Clint Eastwood would have been perfect as the trader (like he was in Unforgiven) But I think Harrison Ford is not nerdy enough for JB.lol.

My guess is that in LJ's eyes he saw Trader as being Harry Dean Stanton -his favorite actor.

I have seen him in many movies, but only one role comes to mind offhand. I remember a rather dramatic "Avenge Me Boys,Avenge Me!" in the movie: "Red Dawn". He was in a Russian concentration camp during their occupation in Colorado.

Brett in Alien (1979) Brain in Escape from New York (1981) Toot Toot in Green Mile (1999) and around 168 other parts from 1954 onwards...

This photo from IMDB just shouts TRADER...

Now that you mention it I remember him very well as "Brain" in Escape from New York (my fav John Carpenter film/Kirk Russell role) I also remember him in "Alien". Like I said,at the time the only role I could recall was the one in "Red Dawn". I did not imply that he did not play numerous other roles. I am aware he has an extensive career. Thanks for the link, I am going there now.

I think Harrison Ford playing a Indiana Jones like character wouldnt be too nerdy for Jb...remember in the Holy Grail, where it showed him in the classroom with glasses and him ranting on antiquity and how X never ever marks the spot?
That would be perfect imho.
Just replace the whip with his shotgun, ad upgrade the revolver to a Uzi
But this discussion is moot, as he's surely too old now.
Quick question, wasnt there a animated deathlands clip somewhere online some years ago? I completly forgot what it was called, but it was less then a minute long...showed someone riding a wag at ryan on a clif edge, and ryan and krysty shooting it or something.
This was really ancient though, I was only entering my teens when I first saw it.

I meant Harrison ford was too masculine and too large/tall of a man to play JB as JB is supossed to be short and skinny/scrawny.
You have a good point though,Harrison did look bookwormish and nerdy as a professor teaching in the Indiana Jones movie.
I love Harrison Ford as an actor. personally. I just think he is too old now, as I think someone else already said. Jb is supposed to be 35/37 correct?
